What eczema can look like

Atopic dermatitis commonly causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin. In babies it often affects the face and scalp; in older children it may involve elbow and knee creases, wrists, ankles and the neck.

Daily skin care

  • Use a fragrance-free moisturizer regularly, especially after bathing.
  • Keep baths short and use lukewarm water.
  • Choose gentle, fragrance-free cleansers and detergents.
  • Keep fingernails short to reduce skin damage from scratching.
  • Use prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment exactly as directed.

When to seek medical help

Arrange review if sleep is repeatedly disturbed, the rash is widespread, treatment is not helping or you are unsure about the diagnosis.

Prompt assessment is needed for fever, rapidly spreading redness, painful skin, pus, yellow crusting, clusters of blisters or a child who appears unwell.

Important perspective

Food should not be removed from a child's diet solely because eczema is present. Suspected food allergy requires an individual clinical assessment.
