What is OAE screening?
Otoacoustic emission testing is a quick, non-invasive screen that measures responses generated by the inner ear. It is usually performed while the baby is settled or asleep.
What does “refer” mean?
A refer result does not automatically mean permanent hearing loss. Fluid, movement, background noise or an incomplete response can affect screening. The important step is to complete the recommended repeat screen or diagnostic assessment promptly.
Who needs careful follow-up?
- Babies who stayed in NICU or required significant respiratory support.
- Babies with certain infections, craniofacial differences or a family history of early hearing loss.
- Any baby who does not pass the initial or repeat screen.
Watch development too
Parents should discuss concerns about response to sound, speech development or loss of previously acquired skills even if newborn screening was passed.
Screening is not a diagnosis. Follow the testing pathway recommended by the neonatal, audiology or ENT team.
