Why newborns become jaundiced

Jaundice is caused by bilirubin accumulating in the blood. It is common in newborns, but the timing, level, gestational age and clinical condition determine whether observation, feeding support, testing or treatment is needed.

How bilirubin is assessed

Clinicians may use a skin measurement or blood test. The result is interpreted against the baby's age in hours, gestation, risk factors and trend rather than a single universal number.

What phototherapy does

Phototherapy uses a specific light wavelength to help the body process bilirubin. Feeding and hydration are supported, and bilirubin is rechecked according to the care plan.

Support feeding

Frequent effective feeding helps bilirubin leave the body. A feeding assessment is important when the baby is sleepy, attachment is difficult or weight loss is concerning.

Urgent assessment: jaundice in the first 24 hours, yellow colour reaching the legs, very poor feeding, difficulty waking, a high-pitched cry, abnormal arching, seizures, fever or a baby who appears unwell.

Do not use sunlight as a substitute for prescribed phototherapy.
